How Digital Health and Real-World Evidence is Changing Clinical Trials
Although the traditional randomized controlled trial is the gold standard in research, the rise of digital health solutions is reshaping the field with the increased prevalence of alternative trial designs. These include decentralized digital clinical trials (DCT) that allow patients to enroll regardless of geographic constraints. This is made possible by the massive amount of real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) that digital health technology and electronic health records (EHR) provide.
Apple Adds Interoperable Medicine Tracking Feature to iPhone Health
Apple has launched a new medication tracking feature to its iPhone health app. In the process, the company moved a step closer to creating its own interoperable electronic health record (EHR) ecosystem. Apple will likely only share said data with apps within the app store that have been thoroughly vetted for privacy issues. However, some point out that there may be setbacks and downsides with that approach.
Amazon, Walmart and Other Providers Ask US Congress to Extend COVID-19 Telehealth policies
A group consisting of 370 care providers has asked the US Senate to extend pandemic policies regarding telehealth. These policies provide extra flexibility to telehealth services, like cross-state services or the relaxation of in-person visits for mental healthcare. The organizations consist of massive providers like Amazon, Walmart, and many others.

Opioid Overdoses Reduced by Telehealth
A newly published study finds that a surge of telehealth usage in patients with opioid use disorder during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic improved outcomes and reduced medically-treated overdoses. The investigators analyzed data from a pool of 176,000 Medicare patients, also finding that telehealth usage improved treatment adherence in patients.
Bringing Healthcare to Patients to Improve Outcomes
A recent report from Philips found that delivering care outside hospital settings is a key priority of healthcare leaders. Distributed care models that provide care to patients outside of hospital settings can help reduce the strain on healthcare systems and reduce barriers to access for patients, especially for marginalized and/or rural patients.
Amazon Shutters Telehealth Service Amazon Care
An internal memo from Neil Lindsay, head of Amazon Health Services, indicates that the company is planning to close Amazon Care. The company plans to scrap the telehealth service due to it being “not a complete offering,” nor a “long-term solution.” However, Amazon does not seem primed to pull out from healthcare altogether.
Three Steps to Healthcare Digitization
Although healthcare technology is advancing across the board, misconceptions exist that dissuade some from embracing the process of digitization. The first is that healthcare organizations are on the ball with cybersecurity. Instead, many healthcare systems don’t take sufficient measures to prevent cyber crimes. In a new Managed Health Executive, Ben Scully talks about more misconceptions and three ways to move forward with healthcare digitization.
Improving Health Outcomes With Personalization
Despite great advances in medical care in recent decades, there is still significant room for growth in improving health outcomes worldwide. In a new Times of India article, Dr. Arbinder Singal, CEO and co-founder of Fitterfly, discusses how digital health solutions can facilitate personalized medicine and improve health outcomes for chronic and acute diseases. They do this, in part, by producing and monitoring large amounts of patient data, potentially spurring an intervention if needed.
New App from French Biotech Personalizes Drug Side Effects
Side effects are a significant contributor to hospitalization and treatment discontinuation. A new free app called Goodmed from Synapse Medicine lets users enter important details from their medical history and generates a detailed personalized list of potential side effects they may experience. Information provided by the app is contributed by official ANSM documents and the expert physicians and pharmacists at Synapse.
Using Patient-Centered Digital Health Solutions to Improve Mental Health Outcomes
In recent years, digital health solutions have been developed for a variety of chronic conditions, but have yet to meet their promise. This “translation gap” represents a target for improving the state of digital health and bettering the health outcomes of patients. Mental healthcare, in particular, could benefit from digital health solutions.
