⁤Production specialist WuXi Biologics has opted out of the 2024 BIO International Convention following U.S. biosecurity measures specifically targeting Chinese manufacturers. ⁤⁤A spokesperson from the company confirmed their withdrawal in early April, a notable change as the company has attended this convention since 2020. ⁤⁤Their decision coincides with heightened scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers, who proposed the BIOSECURE Act in January. ⁤⁤This piece of legislature aims to block “foreign adversary biotechs” from receiving U.S. federal funding and restricts their participation in U.S. healthcare programs, potentially isolating companies such as WuXi Biologics from the U.S. market. ⁤⁤Although not directly mentioned in the act, WuXi Biologics has been indirectly affected due to its affiliation with WuXi AppTec which was directly named in the act. ⁤⁤The biotech trade group BIO currently endorses the act, advocating for U.S. biotech primacy and raising alarms against potential dominance by global competitors such as China. ⁤⁤Several other Chinese CROs and CDMOs will still participate in the convention. ⁤⁤Despite the controversy, WuXi Biologics remains committed to compliance and servicing its global clients. ⁤
