Study Finds Hospitals Charge More for Drugs Than Specialty Pharmacies

A recent AHIP study found hospitals charged an average of $7000 more than specialty pharmacies for a single treatment. In addition, patients paid $1,400 more at a physician’s office than at a specialty pharmacy. AHIP argues that these higher prices are intended to increase reimbursement payments from insurers.

According to Victoria Bailey of Revcycle Intelligence, “A 2019 analysis from the Partnership for Health Analytic Research, LLC (PHAR) found that hospitals retained 91 percent of the gross profit margin on physician-administered drugs. In contrast, physician offices collected 9 percent of the gross profit margin.”
