Sanofi is marking this year’s Rare Disease Day, February 28th, with its new “This is Rare” campaign, which will feature the voices of patients living with rare diseases. The campaign is part of a large push by the company and others to develop therapeutics for the rare disease community, which accounts for one in seventeen people in the UK.
According to Emily Kimber, “One in 17 people will be affected by a rare disease at some point in their lives, amounting to around 3.5 million people in the UK. However, the lack of scientific knowledge and quality information on rare diseases often results in a delay in diagnosis, and the broad diversity of disorders and relatively common symptoms mean that initial misdiagnosis is frequent.”
