Purdue Pharma’s $6 Billion Settlement for the Opioid Epidemic Approved by Judge

US Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain has approved the $6 billion bankruptcy settlement for Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family, who played a critical role in the opioid crisis. In addition, the family’s name will be scrubbed from every institution that has taken their namesake. Likewise, the family is banned from the opioid industry internationally and must dissolve their company. However, this may not spell the end for the family’s legal consequences.

According to Fleur Jeffries of PM Live, “Although the settlement will end any civil claims made against the Sacklers over Purdue’s involvement in the opioid crisis, it does not make them exempt from future criminal liability.”
