Pearson: Patient Engagement is Key to Fixing ‘Broken’ System

January 31, 2020

The key first step to fixing the “broken” U.S. health care system is to overhaul how organizations engage with patients, Steve Pearson, president of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER), writes in a recent commentary.

Touting his organization’s efforts on the matter, Pearson writes that ICER uses “patients’ perspectives as the guiding structure” of its cost-effectiveness assessments.

“The first step has to be guided by patients and patient groups who know the condition, know the diversity of patient experience, and who can bring a truly comprehensive view to the table on what matters most to patients,” he writes. “Only when that input is made central to any assessment of value can we usefully judge the evidence on how well drugs improve the quality and length of patients’ lives.”
