Only 15% of Health Systems and Insurance CEOs are Women

December 2, 2021

The gender divide is pronounced in leadership positions in the health systems and insurance groups, results from a JAMA Network Open study indicate. Women accounted for 15% of CEOs in medium-sided health insurance groups and health systems and 20-50% of senior leadership roles. Women were more likely to fill these roles in companies headed by a female CEO.

According to study authors Odel et al., “Members of the BOD (board of directors), whose primary responsibility includes choosing a CEO, appeared to have a role in increasing the representation of women as CEOs in health systems when the BODs had a more gender-diverse composition. It also appeared that organizations with senior leadership with gender diversity were more likely to have a woman as CEO.“
