Digital Food Pharmacy Season Health Receives $3.4 Million in Funding

Unhealthy lifestyle factors like diet contribute strongly to health outcomes, spurring a wave of “food-as-medicine” startups. One of these startups, Season Health, has received $34 million in a series A round from investor Andreesen Horowitz and other investment firms. The company, which launched publicly in February offers meal prescriptions for chronic conditions as well as delivery logistics items to bring the food to patients’ doors.

According to Heather Landi of Fierce Healthcare, “Even traditional providers and payers that offer food-as-medicine benefits have experienced surprisingly low rates of utilization due to lack of attractive food options, or difficulties in enrollment, reimbursement, or fulfillment, she wrote, noting that most patients fail to follow through on the nutritional coaching they receive with any regularity.”
