AstraZeneca Begins Global Withdrawal of COVID-19 Vaccine

⁤AstraZeneca has initiated a global withdrawal of its COVID-19 vaccine as demand has declined. ⁤⁤Initially celebrated as “the vaccine for the world” due to its ease of storage in common fridges, the global demand for AstraZeneca’s vaccine has declined as newer vaccines emerged targeting novel viral variants. ⁤⁤The company has ceased vaccine assembly and distribution, beginning a voluntary withdrawal in the EU. ⁤⁤Despite the three billion doses distributed globally that have saved an estimated 6.5 million lives, the vaccine’s use was marred by reports of rare but serious blood clots. ⁤⁤This led several regions to limit or suspend its use. ⁤⁤AstraZeneca maintains that its vaccine has an adequate safety profile, yet faces legal action from individuals who developed the aforementioned clots. ⁤⁤The company is now working with regulators to conclude this chapter in their fight against the pandemic. ⁤
