AMWA Responds to Controversial JAMA Oncology Article on the Role of Medical Writers in Publications

A recent article published in JAMA Oncology draws attention to the widespread use of professional medical writers in randomized controlled trials in oncology, noting the possible bias of these writers. The American Medical Writers Association (AMWA), the European Medical Writers Association (EWMA), and the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) responded with a joint statement clarifying the benefits of ethical medical writers.

“While we as medical communicators understand the value of medical writers, it is imperative that we respond publicly to these attacks. As highlighted in the joint response, the use of our profession’s expertise improves accuracy, timeliness, and ethical adherence.” Read the response here.
