Amazon Teams Up with Thread to Advance Decentralized Clinical Trials Platform

April 4, 2022

Amazon Web Services has announced a new partnership with the US-based tech company Thread to promote and expand a digital platform meant to support decentralized clinical trials (DCT). The cloud-based platform will use a novel machine learning architecture that will help researchers accelerate their DCTs. The two companies estimate that the new automation features they are implementing will help cut costs for customers by one quarter. This merger comes as researchers increasingly rely on DCTs.

According to Phil Taylor of Pharma Phorum, “The adoption of DCTs was a major factor in allowing clinical trials to continue during the early stages of the pandemic, embedding the approach in the clinical research toolkit as a way to make it easier for patients to participate in studies from their own homes, rather than through clinic visits. DCTs can also reduce costs and improve the efficiency of trials, say proponents, although concerns have been expressed that their reliance on digital technologies could compound disparities in access to clinical research among some demographics.”
