Comparative Effectiveness Funding Report Released
The report to the President and Congress for how the HHS Office of the Secretary should spend $400 million in funding for patient-centered research (comparative effectiveness research) was released at the end of June. Read full report and view webcast here .

New Quality Data on Hospital Readmission Rates
now available on Hospital Compare WebsiteThe issue of hospital readmissions has been cited by the policymakers and US Administration as a potential opportunity for improving health care quality and reducing unnecessary health care spending. Until now, hospitals have had only information on those patients who return to their own hospital, but not about patients who were readmitted to a different hospital.

The NICE/Eisai/Pfizer battle is finally over regarding access to Alzheimer's drugs
andNICE upheld its original decision to ban the reimbursement of Aricept, plus Exelon (rivastigmine, Novartis) and Reminyl (galantamine, Shire), for individuals with early stage disease.  In other news, NICE is working with the Medical Research Council (MRC), a government-funded body that pays for academic research within the UK-to develop new methodologies to underpin its decision-making process.  More here.  Copyright PharmExec.Com

Education and Training

Up to three project-based studentships available in Health, Econometrics and Data Group (HEDG) at the University of York as of October 1, 2009.  Applicants should be seeking postgraduate research leading to PhD under two themes:  inequality of opportunity in health; evaluation of public health interventions. Deadline for applications is August 10th, 2009.


The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) announced intent to continue its individual postdoctoral fellowship program.  AHRQ recently issued and updated this funding opportunity announcement, highlighting priority areas for applications in one of the six AHRQ portfolios:  value, prevention/care management, health information technology, comparative effectiveness, patient safety, and innovations and emerging issues.  Read full announcement and details here.  Contact Shelley Benjamin with further questions.

A new program at University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK, is offering an MSc in Health Economics as well as up to 6 scholarships for reduced fees.  This program is designed for those seeking careers in health economics, such as a health economist, in research or in practice in the health field, or one in which health economics is essential.
