Pricing, market access and the return of reality
Except when they are distorted by legislation or market imperfections, markets set the price of products and services based on their value to the consumer. Certainly, short-term digressions and knowledge anisotropy create temporary opportunities, but in the long run, and especially in this information age, suppliers should expect to get a price that reflects the value of what they provide.

Simulation sample sizes for Monte Carlo partial EVPI calculations
Published in J Health Economics. Partial expected value of perfect information (EVPI) quantifies the value of removing uncertainty about unknown parameters in a decision model. EVPIs can be computed via Monte Carlo methods. An outer loop samples values of the parameters of interest, and an inner loop samples the remaining parameters from their conditional distribution. This nested Monte Carlo approach can result in biased estimates if small numbers of inner samples are used and can require a large number of model runs for accurate partial EVPI estimates.

The End of Free Drug Pricing in Germany?
According to local press, Germany's health minister Philipp Roesler is about to open fire against the branded drug industry with a proposal to break the sector's so-called 'price monopoly' and force them to negotiate lower prices directly with insurers. Until now, Germany has been one of Europe's last bastions of "free" upfront drug pricing. Sure, the hurdles come afterwards, but both there and in the UK drug firms have--until now--been allowed to set more or less the price they like for new drugs. The New Four P's of Marketing
Remember the 4-P's of Marketing (product, placement, price, and promotion)? PharmExec.Com suggests these have been replaced by 4 New P's: Predictive Modeling, Personalization, Peer-to-Peer, Participation. According to the author, " Merely driving demand doesn't work anymore. The key to success in this new marketing landscape is a shift from a pharmaceutical-driven, push-based model toward a pull-based model, where desire for information and education drives action on the part of consumers and medical professionals." (Source: John Gardner, PharmaExec, Dec. 9, 2009)
The New Yorker Article: The Cost Conundrum
"Providing health care is like building a house. The task requires experts, expensive equipment and materials, and a huge amount of coördination. Imagine that, instead of paying a contractor to pull a team together and keep them on track, you paid an electrician for every outlet he recommends, a plumber for every faucet, and a carpenter for every cabinet. Would you be surprised if you got a house with a thousand outlets, faucets, and cabinets, at three times the cost you expected, and the whole thing fell apart a couple of years later?"

White Paper: An Economic Assessment of the Relationship between Price Regulation and Incentives to Innovate in the Pharmaceutical Industry
In this paper, we explore the possible consequences that pricing and reimbursement regulation may have on pharmaceutical innovation. We first investigate qualitatively how a pharmaceutical firm is likely to strategically respond in its R&D activities to pricing and reimbursement regulation. We then quantitatively evaluate these effects in the context of a calibrated decision-theoretic model of drug development in which a pharmaceutical firm is forward-looking and takes future pricing regulation into account in making current development decisions.
